LING Pui-sze was born in Guangzhou, China in 1989 and moved to Hong Kong in 1997. In 2012, she graduated in Fine Arts (BFA) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, receiving the Wucius Wong Creative Ink Painting Award at graduation.
LING Pui-sze has created a number of experimental ink and collage series in which she collects images of nature taken by various machines, such as microscopes and satellites. She tore and reassembled the pieces into abstract creatures and landscapes which creates transfigured images that are both familiar and distant. This documents Ling’s interpretation of reality. The works’ texture is created by collaging different types of paper and the digital images’ colours and sizes are constantly adjusted through computer and inkjet printer, Ling creates with an iterative process. The works manifest incidental organic forms, resembling the evolution of life and a reconstruction of another world on the canvas. Together with other media such as sculpture, video and installation, Ling also explores the relationship between biological traits and the development of human society.
Her solo exhibitions included It all begins in the sea (2014) and Life is meant to be messy (2022). Joint exhibitions included Humor in Ink (2021) and Women + Ink | China + Hong Kong (2019). Her works were featured in Art Basel – Hong Kong, Art Central, Fine Art Asia and Ink Asia. Her works are collected by M+ Museum for Visual Culture and private collectors.

"Tuning" series
"In times of turbulence, we all need to know how to become in tune with ourselves ." - <The Piano Tuner> Kuo Chiang Sheng
Tuning an instrument is an important act before a performance, not only for ensuring it is in tune with different songs, but also in tune with itself as the pitches are affected by the passage of time and the change of temperature. Artist Ling Pui Sze thinks of the body as a musical instrument, as it requires regular adjustment for maintaining physical and mental wellness.
Ling went through different surgeries and medical treatments in recent years. The recovery process reminds her of the status of tuning the Zheng and Kalimba. This new series of collage works are composed by her own microscopic cell images and X-ray images. Through repetitively printing and assembling these images, Ling keeps a record of her body in different times, which constantly reminds her the importance of staying healthy.

"Reactionary 3" is one of the works from the "Reactionary" series. Since 2016, this series has been documenting my various reactions in daily life, like a visual diary. Each artwork exhibits a highly variable collage method and visual style.
I have created numerous experimental ink and collage series, and "Reactionary 3" marks the first time I used thin tissue paper fragments torn and reassembled into abstract compositions. By tearing and scraping the surface layers of washi paper, I formed blocks of color and lines, creating distorted images that are both familiar and distant.
I have been learning and practicing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) recently. When persistent thoughts hook our minds, we can take a step back and reexamine them from the perspective of an observer, realizing that "I am not my thoughts." Simultaneously, we allow ourselves to coexist with these thoughts, accepting our own experiences and emotions. After unhooking from these thoughts, we can make choices aligned with our values. This artwork documents my interpretation and feelings towards self-awareness and self-noticing.
